Há um segredo para ser feliz quando se mora fora do seu país? Is there a formula for happiness when you live abroad?

Quando nos mudamos para outro país, não temos a exata noção do que nos aguarda em terras estrangeiras. Nossa vida confortável (no sentido de você saber exatamente como gerenciar o seu dia a dia, de maneira quase que automática, dentro dos hábitos e costumes do país onde você cresceu)  e eu diria até 'acomodada', é deixada para trás e uma janela de novas oportunidades se abre diante de nós: uma nova profissão, uma nova rotina, novos povos para conviver, novos hábitos e assim vai.

Moving to another country is always a chalenging experience, since we do not know exactly what to expect from a foreign culture. The life you judged to be confortable (the daily routine you were used to manage in a easy and almost automatic way, according to your cultural habits) is left behind. But, on the other hand new opportunities, such as  new carriers, new routines, new people to meet, new cultural habits and so on will be available for you.  

Ouvindo relato de muitas pessoas que já foram expatriadas ou que já imigraram, você percebe um mundo inteiro de experiências diversas e divergentes, mesmo indo essas pessoas para os mesmos países. Cada qual, baseado em sua experiência de vida e nos valores sob os quais a pessoa foi criada, vê o novo ambiente de maneira muito diferente.  E, muitas vezes, não basta apenas o local, que pode ser maravilhoso (ou nem tanto), para fazer com que as pessoas se sintam felizes ao alcançar o objetivo de morar no exterior. Não raro, vemos cônjuges que deixaram suas vidas profissonais ou pessoais para trás de forma a viver esta nova jornada, se queixado da nova realidade. Mas, se você está deixando seu país, como expatriado (não vou entrar no mérito da vida de imigrante, que dever ser mais dura neste quesito), ou seja, com todo o respaldo de uma empresa, por que está tão infeliz, porque reclama de tudo na nova cultura, porque a compara, o tempo todo, com a sua cultura, que, para VOCÊ, é melhor? Será que a expectativa x realidade não foi mal dimensionada?

Listening to other immigrants and expatriates, you quickly realize that people live through several different and unique experiences, even though people are living in the same country and experiencing the same culture. Due to an individual's way of life and based on their own cultural backgrounds, each person perceives the new country in a different way. It is not uncommon to meet people that are not happy where they currently are, even after they have reached their goals of choosing to live abroad, and it does not matter if they are living in a great city or not. Frequently, we meet people who chose to leave their professional lives behind in order to accompany their partners in their new journey, but end up complaining about that new reality. But, if a person choses to live abroad as an expatriate with full company support (I will not mention the harder reality an immigrant usually find themselves in.) why do they keep themselves so unhappy? Why do they complain all the time about the new culture? Why do they often have to compare the new place's culture to their own? As if their culture is better than other's cultures? Could it be that the difference between "expectation x reality" is that massive?

Pela minha experiência de três anos como esposa de executivo expatriado e mais de 20 anos atendento executivos expatriados (e muitas vezes dando certo suporte para suas famílias), entendo que as pessoas muitas vezes não buscam ser felizes. Reclamar é mais fácil do que tentar descobrir, do que estudar como se sair de certas situações. Julgar é mais rápido do que tentar entender a cabeça ou o modo como o "local" faz isso ou aquilo. Se isolar é melhor do que se jogar no meio da nova cultura e do povo. 

Having the experience of living 3 years as an expatriated's wife and more than 20 years giving assitance to foreign executives (as well as supporting their families), I realized that some people do not always try to be happy. Complaining is easier than discovering and finding a way to solve their "issues". Judging is quicker than trying to understand the local's believes and way of life. Self isolation is better than to integrate with the different people and live within the new culture.  

Então, o que vem com a reclamação diária, com o julgamento fácil e com o isolamento? Coisa boa é que não pode ser...

What good comes from the daily complaints, easy judgement and self isolation? I believe that nothing good comes from it... 

Dá para perceber que a maioria das pessoas busca o caminho mais fácil (ou, sob outra ótica, o mais difícil). Se fecham em bolhas em suas comunidades de mesma nacionalidade para gastar seu tempo olhando o outro, julgando a maneira diferente de ser, discriminando pessoas por não serem da mesma nacionalidade que elas e não fazer as coisas como elas as fazem...

It is very clear that most people choose the easiest way (or by my point of view the hardest). They want to live in a bubble inside their same nationality's comunities and spend their time gossiping about other people's life, judging the way that others are and their different way of living or being. Some people are discriminated simply because they are different or are not from the same nationality. 

O que fazer, então, para ser feliz em "terras além mar"?
Que tal, primeiro, fazer uma lista das coisas que você gostaria de fazer mas não podia quando estava no seu país e colocar em prática na nova vida? Pode ser até "dormir até mais tarde"... tudo vale. E, colocar em prática...

So, how can someonw reach happiness abroad? How about first making a list of the things that you always wanted to do when you were in your country and make it happen? Simple things like "wake up later" can be listed... Just exercise it!

Que tal, passar a descobrir os novos cantos da cidade nova e das proximidades? E um curso legal? Que seja de artes, ou do que você gostar de fazer, tudo vale... Passou a ter que cozinhar e descobriu aí um hobby (eu passei, mas tenho que confessar que não é o meu :-) )? Tá valendo convidar os amigos para serem sua cobaia... Tenha certeza que vai render boas risadas e você vai ter boas lembranças depois. Aqui em casa, meu marido virou o cozinheiro oficial do grupo!

How about discover the new corners of the new city and its neighbourhood? How about taking a course? It can be about anything you want it to be... Everything is possible. Cook at home and accidentaly discovered a new hobby? (I must cook at home, but I have to confess that this is not my shtick :-) )? So, invite your friends to be your "lab rats" and experiment with new recipies... Be sure that you and all your friends have a fun time together to keep that memory. At home, for example, my husband is our group's master Chef! 

Que tal tentar conversar com os locais? sim, eles não vão te morder.... te garanto! aproveite que ninguém te conhece mesmo e use aquele cabelo que nunca teve coragem de usar antes, ou aquela roupa que você não sabia se era adequada para ir ao "chique" shopping da sua cidade, pois todo mundo iria ficar te olhando. Tem horas que você mesmo vai pensar: "é... exagerei..." Mas, tente... 

How about trying to talk with the locals? That is a nice experience and I assure you that they will not bite you... Take the advantage that nobody knows you and style your hair as you always wanted to but was shy to do it or wear those clothes that you wished to but was afraid about being judged by the people in your own country. Sometimes you will think: "ops, that was too much"... But just try it... 

Pense nas coisas boas que a nova vida está te proporcionando e foque nisso. Tenha uma rotina de coisas a fazer. Tenho certeza que você vai se descobrir muito ocupado! E, com isso, a felicidade vem de brinde! 

Think about the good opportunities that life is showing you and foccus on achieving them. Create a routine and have a to do list. I am sure that you will find out that you can be a really busy person if you put your mind to it. Thus, the happiness will come naturally.

Estou na China já há quase três anos. Embora eu não esteja em uma cidade internacional como Shanghai, Pequim e outras, adoro estar aqui. As diferenças culturais são muito grandes e o idioma é realmente o maior dos desafios. Sou muito feliz e tento ensinar isso para meu filho. Desta forma, meu marido, que é quem está trabalhando, tem o sossego que precisa para desempenhar bem o papel a que se propôs quando aceitou o desafio. Assim, todos saem ganhando!

I have been living in China for almost three years. Although I do not live in an international city like Shanghai, Peking or others, I love being here. The cultural differences are really huge and the language can be a barrier. But i am happy here and I try to teach this to my son. In this direction, my husband can work in a unconcerned way, having the peace of mind he needs to achieve the goals he has set when he accepted the challenge. Thus, everyone wins!

A vida passa muito rápido, então temos que fazer com que ela valha a pena e não ficar só esperando que a felicidade bata à nossa porta... 

Life goes very fast. We have to make it worth. Do not stay still, waiting and hoping that happiness will simply appear one day, reach for that happiness and make it your own.

Changchun, China, First impressions / Changchun China - Primeiras impressões - 中国长春

Changchun - 长春 - is the capital of Jillin province. It is one of the biggest city in Northeast China.  Its metropolitan area has a population of approximately 7.6 million.  

Changchun - 长春 - é a capital da Província de Jilin, sendo uma das maiores cidades do nordeste da china, com aproximadamente 7,6 milhões de habitantes em sua região metropolitana.  

When we first arrived here, we have got the impression that every single shop was the same. They looked like they were a lot of Chinese restaurants in a row based in our poor contact with Chinese culture in Brazil, which only included quite few visits to some Chinese restaurants. 

Quando chegamos aqui, tivemos a impressão de que cada estabelecimento comercial era a mesma coisa. Parecia que havia vários restaurantes chineses um atrás do outro, já que essa era a nossa única referência, baseada em algumas idas a poucos restaurantes chineses no Brasil e dado ao pouco contato que tivemos com a cultura até então. 

For people like us that could not read any single character in mandarim, there was no difference between the places...

Para pessoas como nós, que não conseguem ler um único caracter em mandarim, não havia distinção entre os lugares... 

A simple visit to the supermarket was like if you were in "another planet". Their way of thinking is different from our way, their body language is also different. So, mimics is not  always a good way to comunicate.  Smoothly, you get used to the culture and it turns into a rich and interesting experience. 

Uma simples visita ao supermercado  nos dava a impressão de que estávamos em outro planeta. A maneira deles de pensar é completamente diferente, assim como a linguagem corporal e a  mímica nem sempre é uma maneira efetiva de se comunicar. Aos poucos, você se habitua e passa a ser uma experiência bastante rica e interessante. 

At the beginning, the most interesting situation was the fact that people in a not so international city like Changchun is were (and still are) very curious about foreigners! They look at you as if you were not a real person. It is very common someone asking to take pictures with you. It was really different for us who were used to live in a place that it is not so usual to talk or to be touched by people that you have not met before. 

The people are very nice and are always ready to help you! 

A situação mais interessante é que, em uma cidade não tão internacional como Changchun, as pessoas tem muita curiosidade a respeito dos estrangeiros. Olham para você como se você não fosse real. É bastante comum pedirem para tirar fotos com você. Isto é realmente diferente, já não estamos acostumados a falar ou sermos tocados por pessoas que nunca vimos antes. Nos sentimos como "pop stars" ... 🤭

O povo é muito carismático e as pessoas estão sempre prontas a te ajudar!

The first winter came. In São Paulo, Brazil, the city where we came from, the winter temperature is around 15 degrees, in the "very cold days" reaching a temperature around 12 degrees celsius.  Our first challenge was to survive in a place that reaches -20o. to -30o. Celsius! Easy, isn't?  😱

Então, veio o primeiro inverno. Em São Paulo, Brasil, cidade de onde viemos, a temperatura no inverno é, em média, de 15 a 12 graus nos dias "mais frios". Nosso primeiro desafio foi sobreviver em um lugar em que o termômetro alcança de 20 a 30 graus negativos!! Tá fácil, não?!? 

We did it! We survived! Three winters later, I am still here to tell you some more stories! 

Conseguimos! Sobrevivemos! Três invernos depois, estou eu aqui para contar a vocês mais histórias....
